Analysing Oral History Interviews: Strategies For Repeat Success Do you have or plan to have oral history recordings and/or transcripts but are unsure about how to analyse them? Would you like guidance on what to look out for in oral history interviews and transcripts so you can reveal the intended meaning behind your interviewees’ unique voices? If this sounds like you, then come and join us for our ‘Analysing Oral History Interviews: Essential Guidance For Repeat Success.’ Friday 16th May 2025 14.00 hrs GMT. The cost of this workshop is €29. Places are limited to a maximum of 20 participants. Make this Christmas the season where you learn how to analyse those all important oral history interviews. Join renowned oral historian Dr Angela Maye-Banbury live on Zoom from her home on Achill Island, Co Mayo Republic Of Ireland for this special Christmas workshop Thursday 19th Dec 2024 14.00 hrs GMT. At the end of the ‘Analysing Oral History Interviews: Essential Strategies For Repeat Success.’ workshop, participants will: (i) Know how to contextualise and critique of the social, cultural and political factors which impact on an oral history interview including: the importance of locating the interview content with a body of existing scholarship on the theme of your oral history project. (ii) Be clearer about the interview purpose and scope of analysis: the rationale behind the oral history project and how this shapes the dialogue between interviewer and interviewee; develop awareness of habitus to explore the interviewer and interviewee dynamic. (iii) Have knowledge on how the memory is an unreliable witness and the power of subjectivity when analysing oral history interviews inductively. (iv) Be able to prepare oral history transcripts ready for analysis and ethics (consents obtained) in preparation for dissemination. (v) Be shown basic analysis techniques such as open coding and narrative analysis. (vi) Have knowledge of specific things to look out for in a transcript: how the narrator has constructed their story; the images and metaphors the narrator uses; overall discourse; what the narrator has omitted; what appears to be factually accurate or inaccurate (triangulating sources); the extent to which the interview content is congruent with other interviews and sources.
